ATHENS — Sarah Ashlee Barker, a freshman guard on the Georgia Lady Bulldogs basketball team, has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
The Birmingham, Ala., native who prepped at Spain Park High School has played double-digit minutes and made numerous big shots in her first four games as a Lady Bulldog.
Earlier this year against Georgia Tech, she knocked in a jumper that put Georgia up for good in the overtime period. She then nailed a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter that gave her team its largest lead of the game against Oklahoma.
Barker scored eight points against both East Carolina and the Sooners and totaled seven rebounds last week. She has played a pivotal role in Georgia’s 4-0 start this season, averaging 19 minutes per game.
Barker and the Lady Bulldogs won three-straight road games to begin the year, marking the first time in program history that Georgia has won consecutive road contests in the first three games of a season. The Lady Bulldogs’ 4-0 record marks their best start since the 2017-18 team began the year 7-0 on its way to a second-place finish in the SEC standings.
Georgia is set to host Jacksonville State at 7 p.m. ET Wednesday inside Stegeman Coliseum.
