When President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance take their oaths of office during the ceremony on Monday, they will both swear to support and defend the Constitution. But what else will they say?
First, Vance will take his oath, the same one that has been taken by federal lawmakers and employees since 1884, USA.gov said.
Vance will repeat these expected to be spoken by Justice Brett Kavanaugh just before noon:
“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.”
At noon, Trump will take his oath, given to him by Chief Justice John Roberts. The presidential oath is a bit different and shorter by about half than the other affirmation.
“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
It is the same oath he took in 2017.
