Luigi Mangione, the man accused of shooting and killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, appeared in a New York City court, pleading not guilty to the charges filed against him.
Prosecutors said that Mangione gunned down Thompson on Dec. 4 in front of a Manhattan hotel as the CEO arrived for his company’s investors meeting.
Mangione faces 11 charges in New York court including murder in the first degree, two charges of murder in the second degree and murder as an act of terrorism, CNN and The Associated Press reported. He faces life in prison without parole on the state charges.
The state case will be conducted in parallel to federal charges Mangione faces, but the state case is expected to go to trial first, the AP reported. He faces the death penalty on the federal charges, CNN reported.
Mangione was on the run for nearly a week but was arrested at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania. Police said he had a gun that matched the one used in the shooting as well as a fake ID, the AP reported. He also had a notebook in which police said he wrote about hostility against the health insurance industry.
