Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi injured during European trip

Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the former Speaker of the House, was hospitalized after suffering an injury during a trip to Luxembourg, a spokesperson for her office said on Friday.

Pelosi, 84, was traveling with a congressional delegation in Luxembourg to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge when she was injured, her office said in a statement. She was admitted to an area hospital for evaluation.

“Speaker Emerita Pelosi is currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals,” the statement read. “She continues to work and regrets that she is unable to attend the remainder of the CODEL engagements to honor the courage of our servicemembers during one of the greatest acts of American heroism in our nation’s history.

“Speaker Emerita Pelosi conveys her thanks and praise to our veterans and gratitude to people of Luxembourg and Bastogne for their service in World War II and their role in bringing peace to Europe.”

The nature of Pelosi’s injury was not revealed.

The San Francisco congresswoman stepped down from her role as speaker in 2023 but she has continued to serve in the House. She was reelected in November to another two-year term that begins on Jan. 3. She served as Democratic leader in the House for 15 years and was speaker on two different occasions, CBS News reported.

“Speaker Emerita Pelosi was personally and officially honored to travel with the distinguished delegation, many of whom had family members who fought in World War II — including her uncle, Johnny, her office said in the statement. “She looks forward to returning home to the U.S. soon.”
