GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Gwinnett County officials are happy for a reprieve on Thursday after the winter storm caused hazardous conditions on roads which led many motorists stranded or involved in crashes.
More than 1,800 emergency calls and nearly 600 car crashes were reported in Gwinnett County after snow and ice blanketed the area in an 18-hour span, according to Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Juan Madiedo.
Cpl. Madiedo tells WSB Radio several officers were involved in crashes, eight police cruisers were damaged and two officers were injured.
Hundreds of motorists were stranded due to icy and snow filled roads on Tuesday and Wednesday across Georgia, including in Atlanta metro counties of DeKalb, Henry, and Fulton.
Operations at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport are returning back to normal on Thursday after hundreds of flights were canceled and delayed on Wednesday.
As of 7:45 a.m. on Thursday, 31 flights were delayed and 74 flights were canceled, according to Flight Aware.
