Warming centers opening in metro Atlanta due to Arctic Blast

ATLANTA, GA — With temperatures dipping this week, warming centers are available across the metro Atlanta area.

The new center in Peace Baptist Church located at 4000 Covington Highway in Decatur opened on Monday.

Frontline Response officials opened the shelter located at 2585 Gresham Rd. in Atlanta for men and single fathers until further notice.

DeKalb County officials opened four warming centers for those in need at the following locations:

  • Frontline Response International located at 2585 Gresham Rd. in Atlanta
  • Mason Mill Recreation Center located at 1340 McConnell Dr. in Decatur
  • Exchange Recreation Center located at 2771 Columbia Dr. in Decatur
  • Toby Grant located at 593 Parkdale Dr. in Scottsdale

Clayton County officials with the Clayton County Office of Resilience and Sustainability/Clayton County Emergency Management are opening warming centers to provide refuge from the dangerously cold temperatures and winter weather conditions until Tuesday, Jan. 13.

The Clayton County centers and shelters are open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

  • Virginia Gray Recreation Center located at 1475 East Fayetteville Rd. in Riverdale
  • Jim Huie Recreation Center & Steve Lundquist Aquatic Center located at 9045 Tara Blvd. in Jonesboro
    • (Use MARTA Bus Routes #191, #192, #193, and #800)
  • Lake Spivey Recreation Center located at 2300 Walt Stephens Rd. in Jonesboro
  • Carl Rhodenizer Recreation Center located at 3499 Rex Rd. in Rex
  • South Clayton Recreation Center located at 1837 McDonough Rd. in Hampton
    • (Use MARTA Bus Route #800
  • Flint River Community Center located at 153 Flint River Rd. in Riverdale
    • (Use MARTA Bus Route #191

The Clayton County Police Headquarters located at 7911 North McDonough St. in Jonesboro will also be open from 11 p.m. to 9 a.m. based on space availability. Citizens can use MARTA Bus Route #198 to get there.

Clayton County Community Partner Overnight Shelters’ will also stay open from 6 p.m. until 8 a.m. at the following locations:

  • Anointed Vision of Hope located at 8049 Webb Rd. in Riverdale
  • (Use MARTA Bus Route #191) Call 678-834-9213 to make a referral, check availability, and location.
  • Calvary Refuge Homeless Shelter located at 4265 Thurman Rd. in Forest Park
  • (Use MARTA Bus Route #55) Call 404-361-5309 to make a referral, check availability, and location.

Citizens must arrive at the Clayton County church before midnight if they wish to spend the night there.

Additionally, Hearts to Nourish Hope and Ujimay Way will be traveling around Clayton County to offer blankets, food, and water as well as transportation to the shelters mentioned for the homeless community.

In Gwinnett County, several warming centers will open until Friday, Jan. 10 at the following locations:

Buford Senior Center:

  • 2755 Sawnee Ave. in Buford.
  • Bus route 101 I-985, stop 19 or
  • Bus route 50, stop 5047

Shorty Howell Park Activity Building

  • 2750 Pleasant Hill Rd. in Duluth.
  • Bus route 10B, stop 542 and 108

Best Friend Park Gym

Centerville Senior Center:
