An 18 year-old University of Georgia student from Columbus was killed in a single-vehicle in downtown Athens. Athens-Clarke County Police say he was driving a car that hit a retaining wall at the intersection of Pulaski and Broad Streets. The student’s name has not yet been released.

On 02/28/2020 at 0546hrs officers responded to a single vehicle crash at the intersection of Pulaski Street & West Broad Street. The investigation revealed that a 2000 Toyota Camry was travelling south on Pulaski Street approaching West Broad Street. The vehicle failed to stop at the intersection and impacted a rock retaining wall at the southern end of the intersection.
The driver was not restrained and suffered severe injury. He was the only occupant of the vehicle. The driver was transported to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center where he later succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.
The name of the driver is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.
