The University of Georgia was recognized as the 2024 Public Sector Employer of the Year by the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers and the American Council of Engineering Companies of Georgia. The award was presented at the 2024 Georgia Engineering Awards on Feb. 23 at the Gas South District in Duluth.

Held at the conclusion of National Engineers Week, the Georgia Engineering Awards celebrate the state’s exceptional engineers, engineering projects and the achievements of the industry as a whole. Presented by GSPE, the Engineering Employer of the Year Awards acknowledge organizations that foster outstanding engineering talent.

“The University of Georgia is truly honored by this recognition by GSPE and ACEC Georgia,” said S. Jack Hu, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost. “This award underscores our commitment to making UGA a community where everyone can thrive and succeed.”

Accepting the award on behalf of the university were Hu; Don Leo, dean of the College of Engineering; Stephan Durham, assistant dean for student success and outreach; Kelley Saussy, senior director of operations and special projects; Jan Blaine, senior director of development; and Jordan DeRosa, director of corporate engagement.

“I would like to offer my sincere gratitude to ACEC and GSPE for their steadfast support and engagement with our college since its inception,” said Leo. “We are proud to be recognized by these esteemed organizations.”

Founded in 2012, the College of Engineering has grown to over 2,700 students and over 100 faculty members. Another 1,400 students are enrolled in the new interdisciplinary School of Computing, jointly administered by the College of Engineering and the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. UGA elevated its longstanding department of computer science to a School of Computing in 2022 in response to rising student enrollment and the growing role of computing in a range of fields.

The College of Engineering is committed to its mission of creating communities of learning, discovery and innovation among students and faculty, achieved through a rigorous engineering curriculum paired with experiential learning opportunities and industry partnerships.
