GWINNETT COUNTY, GA — The Gwinnett County Health Department will visit the campus of a Gwinnett County high school on Monday to test students and staff as a precaution after a student tested positive for tuberculosis last week.
Gwinnett health officials are set to test approximately 150 students at South Gwinnett High School.
If a test is positive, the individual will need to have a chest x-ray to ensure that they did not have an active disease.
In October, a single case at Cobb County’s Walton High School also triggered a need for large scale testing.
Tuberculosis is caused by bacteria that usually attack the lungs, and it is spread through the air when an infectious person coughs or sneezes.
Dorian Freeman with the Gwinnett County Health Department says “if the individuals that we identify have positive tests, then we notify them of additional steps that we may need to take with the health department.”
Gwinnett County Health Department officials will return to test students and staff on Wednesday and Friday.
