From the Athens-Clarke County Public Utilities Department:
On Monday, March 12 at approximately 1:00 p.m., the Athens-Clarke County Public Utilities Department was notified of a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) along Cedar Creek at Old Lexington Road. At approximately 10:00 p.m. Public Utilities successfully installed a temporary fixture to divert material from the site to the nearest wastewater treatment facility. Permanent repairs are underway and are expected to be completed by 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 13.
Erosion along the creek bank caused a large tree to fall, and the root system damaged the 18” concrete sewer pipe. The resulting sanitary sewer overflow is estimated to be approximately 57,500 gallons. In accordance with regulatory requirements, the State Environmental Protection Division (EPD) has been advised of the overflow, water testing will be performed, and signage will be installed in the area. Athens-Clarke County Unified Government staff will continue to monitor the site.
While the flow of Cedar Creek should be sufficient to dilute the sewer overflow, residents of the area are advised to take precautions around Cedar Creek and avoid contact with the water.
