Rivian critics file suit in Morgan Co

Opponents of the planned $5 billion Rivian electric vehicle factory are asking a judge to overturn the Morgan County Board of Assessor’s recent approval of a rental agreement with the company, alleging the deal violates the state constitution.

If the court agrees, it could threaten the project and invalidate some $700 million in future property tax savings that local officials offered to lure California-based Rivian to build its second factory in Georgia.

At stake is the deal that would bring Rivian to a two thousand-acre tract along the Morgan and Walton county line, where upwards of 75 hundred workers would build electric trucks and SUVs.

Residents against the five billion dollar plan asked a judge to overturn Morgan County’s agreement with the California-based company this week. They believe the deal with Rivian violates the state constitution. State and local officials are offering a one-and-a-half billion dollar incentive package for the company to build their electric car facility about an hour east of Atlanta. The project would allow Rivian to avoid paying 700 million dollars in future property taxes. It’s the biggest deal in Georgia’s history.
