Regents to consider tuition hike

Going to college in Georgia may become even more expensive. The state Board of Regents and the University System of Georgia are looking at options to fill a budget hole, one possibility being tuition increases.

The consideration comes after the legislature cut more than $60 million in funding for public colleges and universities around the state. The legislative budget cuts will impact the University of Georgia to the tune of more than $12 million. University System Chancellor Sonny Perdue is raising the possibility of campus staffing cuts, in Athens and elsewhere around the state.

The Board of Regents is expected to take up the tuition rate proposals at the next Board meeting in May.
