As usual, the number of house fires goes up during the holidays.

Red Cross spokesperson Allison Flexner says the increase comes from a variety of factors including cooking fires on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Space heaters and holiday decorations are also big culprits, she said.

The Red Cross responds to a fire every eight minutes on average. That includes 300 in Georgia just since Thanksgiving.

Flexner advises to make an escape plan in case of fire and make sure smoke detectors are working.
