Athens-Clarke County Police release the results of last week’s roadside checkpoint, saying 158 vehicle operators were cited for safety violations with their cars, trucks and SUVs. One DUI arrest was made in the checkpoint that was set up on the Highway 10 Loop at Oconee Street, with another person arrested on drug and weapons charges.

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department hosted the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety Piedmont Area Traffic Enforcement Network meeting on July 21, 2023.

Forty-Two Officers/Deputies from 11 different law enforcement agencies attended the meeting at the East Precinct. During the meeting, Sgt. Schill from the ACCPD Traffic Unit conducted training on the Use of Force and Tactical Decision Making on Traffic Stops. Afterward, a vehicle checkpoint was conducted on the Exit Ramp from the GA-10 Inner Loop to Oconee St.

Twenty-nine officers from ACCPD and surrounding jurisdictions assisted with the checkpoint. Due to inclement weather, the checkpoint was terminated earlier than the 12:00 planned time. The checkpoint started at 8:06 PM and lasted until 8:41 PM (35 minutes).

During the checkpoint, 158 vehicles were checked for traffic safety violations.
