Police: 78 year-old man was killed in latest vehicle vs pedestrian accident in Athens

Athens-Clarke County Police have released the name of the Athens man killed in Wednesday’s vehicle vs pedestrian accident: Jewell Jarrells was 78 years old, from Athens. The accident happened on Danielsville Road near JJ Harris Elementary School. Police say Jarrells was hit by a car driven by a 55 year-old woman from Athens. Police say she has not been charged, but they say their investigation is ongoing.

On December 27, 2023, at approximately 6:26 pm, ACCPD responded to a pedestrian and vehicle crash near the intersection of Danielsville Road and Fernwood Court.

ACCPD’s initial investigation determined that a pedestrian, Jewell Jarrells (male, 78 YOA, Athens) was crossing Danielsville Road towards J.J. Harris Elementary School when he was struck by a 2013 Chrysler 200, driven by Monica Barnes, (female, 55 YOA, Athens). Barnes was traveling northbound on Danielsville Road.

At this time, no charges have been filed but the incident is under active investigation. This is the 20th fatal crash resulting in 21 fatal injuries in 2023.

A month after the charges surfaced, a Clarke County school teacher is arrested and charged with putting a student in a chokehold. Video shows in the incident involving the 13 year-old student and 30 year-old teacher Brockton Tatum. It happened November 30 at WR Coile Middle School in Athens. Tatum surrendered to deputies at the Clarke County jail.
