The purpose of the Barrow County Farmers Market is to create a vibrant community event that:
· Enhances economic opportunities for local farmers and artisans
· Provides access to fresh local food
· Fosters a sense of community
· Cultivates educational opportunities related to food and agriculture
The Barrow County Farmers Market is funded in part by a USDA Farmers Market Promotion Program grant. This grant provides us with funding needed for the basics while we establish the market, such as:
· Fund a market manager
· Purchase start-up supplies
· Advertise
· Offer SNAP benefits
It will also allow us over the course of the grant cycle to implement some additional programs including:
· Pilot a farm to institution purchasing program to reduce food waste post market and decrease farmer risk of losing product that isn’t purchased at the market
· Create a local food guide
· Implement a media campaign promoting local agriculture and the farmers market
· Provide needs-based production, food safety, and business training.
· Implement nutrition and cooking education through the farmers market.
Farmers Market vendors are selected based on the target market mix to include:
· Raw agricultural products (fruits, vegetables, grains, herbs, honey, etc)
· Meat, eggs, or dairy products
· Fresh flowers or potted plants
· Value-added products made from local agriculture products
· Prepared foods
Arts and crafts (local, high-quality, involving agriculture products & locally sourced materials)
