Oconee County Schools earned an SAT composite score of 1149 for the 2023 testing period, well above state and national mean scores, according to a release Monday by the Georgia Department of Education.

OCS ranked third in the state among all school systems and was the only county system in the Top 10 in Northeast Georgia. North Oconee stood No. 24 and Oconee County landed at No. 27 — as well as Nos. 1 and 2 in Northeast Georgia — among the state’s 390 schools reporting data.

“The SAT results posted by the Class of 2023 are outstanding, and we offer our congratulations on their achievement,” Superintendent Jason L. Branch said. “The scores registered by our seniors confirm dedication, diligence, and attention to detail. Our students, parents, teachers, and leaders are to be commended for the efforts that led to this successful outcome.”

North Oconee posted a mean score of 1159 and Oconee County had a mean of 1136 among a combined 503 test takers. The state mean was 1045 and the national mean was 1003, marking the sixth straight year that the Georgia figure was higher. The mean is a combination of the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and math portions.

North Oconee scored 589 on ERW and 570 on math, while Oconee County registered 587 and 548, respectively. The state means were 534 and 511, and the national means were 510 and 493.

“I am extremely proud of Georgia’s students as they continue to beat the national average on the SAT,” State School Superintendent Richard Woods said. “This is a testament to the hard work of students and teachers, along with the families who have invested in them.”
