Oconee County Commissioners voted last night to allow developers to build a grocery store and shopping complex off the intersection of Highways 78 and 53, near the Oconee Crossing neighborhood. Residents had organized in opposition and say they may file a lawsuit to stop construction of the shopping center.
Athens Mayor Kelly Girtz has submitted his budget proposals to Athens-Clarke County Commissioners. The $184 million County operating plan is expected to get a Commission vote in June, in time for a new budget year that begins on July 1.

An advisory committee that is looking at spending American Rescue Plan dollars meets this afternoon in Athens: the committee is considering the use of federal funding to help reduce the local homeless population. Today’s session is set for 3 o’clock at the Government Building on Dougherty Street.
Hart County Commissioners, meeting in Hartwell, have voted to renew the County’s memorandum of understanding with the University of Georgia and UGA’s Archway Partnership. The University program helps local governments address economic development needs.
With groundbreaking earlier this week, work is underway in Jefferson, with construction of a new Jackson County Administrative Building. It’s going up across the street from the Jackson County courthouse.
