NE Ga police blotter: Athens man dies in White Co jail, Hartwell man arrested after chase

The GBI is investigating the death of an Athens man who died in the White County jail. The Sheriff’s Office in Cleveland says Charles McLeroy was 54 years old. There was no immediate word on cause of death.

A man who was wanted on active warrant in Athens is arrested in Gainesville: 48 year-old Michael McCombs was allegedly behind the wheel of a stolen car that crashed into a pickup truck, then fled the scene of the accident, which happened while Hall County deputies were chasing him. McCombs, who is said to be homeless, is facing a long list of charges that include drug possession and auto theft. He was booked into the Hall County jail.

There is a long list of charges for a man arrested after a high-speed police chase through Hart County: the Sheriff’s Office in Hartwell says speeds topped 100 miles per hour before Matthew Ramey was caught and arrested. He’s in the Hart County jail.

A Hall County man is facing a murder charge in DeKalb County. Jeremy Baker is 32 years old, from Flowery Branch. He was arrested in Lithonia and accused in the shooting death of 28 year-old Rayshaad Jones. DeKalb Police say he was killed during a dispute over a stolen phone.

There’s a scam alert in Habersham County, where the Sheriff’s Office in Clarkesville says bogus contractors are showing up at homes and looking for money for work on roofs and driveways. The Sheriff’s Office says they’ll ask for money up front, won’t do the work, and then disappear.
