Mother cleared of murder in child death in Newton Co

A 49 year-old man from Bowman is arrested on felony assault charges: the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office says Christopher Smith was booked into the Elbert County jail, with bond set at $20 thousand.

A fire that destroyed a 125 year-old house in Habersham County earlier this month has been ruled arson: the state Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the blaze the burned the home in Alto on February 18. There is a reward of up to $10 thousand in the case.

A state Appeals Court has tossed out a murder conviction in the case of a Newton County woman who was found guilty of causing the death of her newborn. Cortney Ball was serving a 15-year prison sentence, now likely to be reduced while she stays behind bars on other charges. In a case that dates back to 2017, she reported the baby missing from her home near Covington. The infant’s body was found the next day. The father, Christopher McNabb, was also convicted on a murder charge and is doing life behind bars.
