Local government notes: A-CC OKs housing plan, Watkinsville focuses on farmland purchase

Athens-Clarke County Commissioners, meeting last night at City Hall, signed off on the proposed affordable housing strategy. Commissioner Dexter Fisher was the only dissenting vote on the measure. The Commissioners gave unanimous approval to a plan to reduce homelessness in Athens.

The Clarke County School District hosts the latest in a series of community conversations on the topic of school safety and security: it’s set for 6 o’clock this evening in the media center at Clarke Central High School in Athens.

What’s billed as a voter education session is on tap for tonight in Athens, set for 6 o’clock at the Miriam Moore Community Center on McKinley Drive.

A public input meeting on the city of Watkinsville’s plans for the Thomas Farms property is set for 5:30 this afternoon at Watkinsville City Hall. The City has closed on the purchase of the 100 acres of farmland off Simonton Bridge Road and will, over the next several months, turn it into a greenspace and recreational area. Another public forum will take place next week.

He’s a former Oglethorpe County Commission Chairman who served as County Manager in Barrow County: Billy Pittard has been named the new County Manager in White County. It’s a job he has held on an interim basis since May.

His name will still be on next month’s ballot, but Dusty Durst says he’s no longer a candidate for a seat on the City Council in Nicholson: Durst had signed up to run in the Nicholson municipal elections that will be held on November 7.
