Local government notes: A-CC Commissioners meet, Winder gets new Mayor

Athens, Ga. (Scott Kinney)

Athens-Clarke County Commissioners met last night at City Hall: in their first meeting of the new year they elected Commissioner Ovita Thornton to serve as Athens’ Mayor Pro-Tem. Commissioners also approved a plan to use upwards of $5 million in federal funding for plans to deal with homelessness in Athens. And the Commission signed off on an increase in the Athens-Clarke County stormwater utility fee.

Jackson County Commissioners and the Jackson County School Board have signed off on resolutions calling for higher homestead exemptions for senior citizens in Jackson County.

Winder has a new Mayor: Jimmy Terrell, elected last fall, was sworn in before last night’s meeting of the Winder City Council.
