Local government briefs include road plans in Madison Co, Commission candidate in Jackson Co

Madison County Commissioners have signed off on a plan to spend $68 thousand on a civil engineering firm’s assessment of road maintenance plans in Madison County.

There is a second candidate in the race to replace retiring Ralph Richardson Jr, who announced last week that would not seek reelection to his District 3 seat on the Jackson County Commission. Chad Bingham says he will run. Bingham joins Steve Wittry in the race to represent the district that covers Braselton and Hoschton. Work is underway in Jackson County, where builders are beginning a $1.5 million expansion of the Jackson County Animal Shelter.

What would be a major warehouse project is in the works for Jackson County: a developer in Atlanta proposes a 1.7 million square foot facility that is planned for 262 acres in Pendergrass.

There is a new mayor in Lula: the recently elected Joe Thomas has taken his oath of office, sworn in by Lula City Clerk Tangi Puckett.

Barrow County Commissioners are set to meet this evening, 6 o’clock at the Historic Courthouse in Winder. Oconee County Commissioners have canceled the meeting that was scheduled for this evening in Watkinsville.

The City Council in Auburn says it will take up next month a proposal to that would raise the price tag on water connection fees in Auburn. The fees could climb from $35 hundred to $5 thousand for the most commonly used size of water meters in new developments. The Council is expected to consider the proposed increase in its next meeting on January 6.
