Local government briefs include affordable housing forum, budget work in Athens

A community forum on affordable housing is on tap for today in Athens, underway at 10 o’clock this morning, hosted by the Athens Community Council on Aging. It takes place at the Council headquarters on Harris Street in Athens.

Budget work is on the agenda for Athens-Clarke County Commissioners: a Mayor and Commission work session is set for 5:30 this afternoon at City Hall.

There is an afternoon meeting of the Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections. It’s set for 4 o’clock at the Government Building on Dougherty Street.

Jackson County Commissioners held last night in Jefferson the first of two public forums on tax assessments: the second is scheduled for Thursday at the Civic Center in Braselton.

This evening’s Barrow County Commission meeting is set for 6 o’clock at the Historic Courthouse in Winder.

There will be a new principal for Jackson County’s Gum Springs Elementary School: Joshua Todd, an assistant principal at Jackson County High School, will begin his new assignment with the start of the new school year in August.

Hall County sets May 23—two weeks from today—as the date for groundbreaking on a new Hall County fire station. It will be built in Buford, less than five miles from Lake Lanier Islands. It’s expected to be open and occupied by firefighters in March of next year.
