Local briefs: UGA Alumni Luncheon, Barrow Co lane closures, Habersham Co chop shop arrests

Today is another awards day at UGA: the University of Georgia’s Alumni Association holds its annual Awards Luncheon.

A man from Jackson County has been arrested on a vehicular homicide charge stemming from a deadly November crash in Habersham County: Robby McDaniel is 57 years old, from Jefferson. The Georgia State Patrol says he ran a stop sign and caused the wreck that claimed the life of 78 year-old Johnny Burton of Toccoa.

Lane closures that started earlier this week will continue through at least tonight and possibly into the weekend in Barrow County: the Georgia DOT is working on Highway 11 near its intersection with Highway 316 in Barrow County.

There are reports that student behavior issues and low test scores are among the reasons for the ouster of a principal in Hall County: Ethan Banks has been told he will not be returning as principal at West Hall Middle School.

A kindergarten student in Gainesville was not seriously injured in a Wednesday school bus accident: the Georgia State Patrol says the driver of the bus will not be charged in the accident, in which the child was struck by a bus that was taking students to Lyman Hall Elementary School in Hall County.

Governor Brian Kemp was on Lake Lanier Wednesday, signing a bill designed to crack down on gang activity in Georgia. The measure passed in this year’s legislative session makes for longer prison sentences for gang members and gang recruiters.

The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office now says the 11 suspects arrested in last week’s drug busts—suspects from Habersham, Hall, and Banks counties caught with marijuana and methamphetamine—were also running an illegal chop shop.
