Local briefs: ribbon cutting for Firefly Bridge, Board meeting for UGA Research Foundation

Today is an opening day in Athens: ribbon cutting ceremonies inaugurating the sales tax-funded Firefly Bridge over Trail Creek are set for 3:30 this afternoon.

The board of directors for the University of Georgia’s Research Foundation holds its spring meeting today in Athens: the board is gathering at the Georgia Center. The meeting culminates with the annual Research Awards banquet, 5:30 this afternoon, also at the Georgia Center.

The University of Georgia’s Office of Sustainability is hosting today’s third annual pollinator census. Instructions for volunteers who want to help out are on the UGA website.

The state Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating two fires in Madison County, one that destroyed a car and another that burned a barn. Both happened on Paoli Road in Carlton.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office says a teenager from Alto is facing aggravated assault charges after a shooting at a home near Gainesville. 19 year-old Zachary Gee allegedly pistol whipped a man and then fired shots at his home. No serious injuries were reported.  Suspect Gee was arrested in Lumpkin County.
