Local briefs: new Supt begins tenure in Athens, convicted teller awaits sentencing in Hartwell

Today is the first day on the job for new Clarke County School Superintendent Robbie Hooker. Dr. Hooker, a former principal at Clarke Central High School, returns to Athens from his most recent post as superintendent in Social Circle. He replaces Dr. Xernona Thomas, who announced her retirement earlier this year.

Tenth District Congressman Jody Hice speaks this evening in Athens, addressing Athens-Clarke County Republicans in a 6 o’clock session at the Country Inn and Suites on Old Epps Bridge Road. Republican Hice is leaving the House after the end of the year, having waged an unsuccessful GOP primary campaign against Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.

The Georgia Bulldogs, after a weekend win over the Auburn Tigers, climb back into the top spot in the Associated Press rankings, ahead of Ohio State and Alabama. The Crimson Tide are still number one in the Coaches Poll, with the Dogs right behind. The Bulldogs are gearing up for a second straight home game, taking on the Vanderbilt Commodores in a Southeastern Conference contest that kicks off at 3:30 Saturday in Sanford Stadium.

The Friends of the Athens Library Fall Book Sale resumes today and wraps up tomorrow. The sale was interrupted when the Library was closed after bedbugs were found on the second floor of the building on Baxter Street. The Library reopened Sunday.

There is one more day of fall break before teachers and students return to classrooms in Oconee County: back to class tomorrow in the schools in and around Watkinsville.

Sentencing is pending in Hart County, where a bank teller in Hartwell has been convicted of stealing more than $70 thousand from the bank at which she was employed. 35 year-old Caise Maxwell was found guilty on three counts.
