Local briefs include Ecology Symposium at UGA

The 28th annual Odum School of Ecology Grad Student Symposium is underway today at UGA, continuing through tomorrow at the Ecology Building on Green Street in Athens.

Some ongoing construction work will make for today’s closure of the Oconee County Senior Center in Watkinsville.

A proposal to merge the magistrate and probate courts in Elbert County could be up for a vote at Monday’s meeting of the Elbert County Commission. The plan, presented as a money-saving measure, would have to be approved by the Georgia legislature.

There is talk of a transportation sales tax for Homer and Banks County: city and county leaders have scheduled a meeting for next month to talk about a referendum that could be held next year. City officials from Alto, Baldwin, Gillsville, Maysville, and Lula have been invited to take part in the session that is set for March 3 at the Civic Center in Homer.
