Local briefs: Commissioner faces second DUI charge in Athens, teen killed in crash in Elbert Co

Athens-Clarke County Commissioner Ovita Thornton says she is thankful for the support she is receiving from what she says is coming from diverse sections of the community. Thornton was arrested late last week and charged, for the second time this year, with driving under the influence. The latest incident happened on North Lumpkin Street; she was charged with DUI after a February accident on West Hancock.

The Clarke County School District listening sessions that began Sunday continue this evening, with a 6 o’clock forum at Clarke Central High School. School Superintendent Robbie Hooker says District officials are gathering public input on a new five-year strategic plan. The forums continue tomorrow evening at Cedar Shoals High School and conclude Wednesday at the Library on Baxter Street.

There is an evening meeting of the Oconee County Planning Commission, a 7 o’clock session at the courthouse in Watkinsville.

This evening’s meeting of the Oconee County School Board is set for 6 o’clock at School District offices on School Street in Watkinsville.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating a deadly weekend car crash in Elbert County: a teenager was killed in the wreck that happened on Highway 17. Micah Blackwell was 19 years old, from Dewy Rose. State Troopers say the driver of a car crossed a center lane and struck Blackwell’s truck. Blackwell was killed; the driver of the car—a 33 year-old man from Elberton—was injured and taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

Gwinnett County Police have a homicide on their hands: a man was shot and killed Sunday in a neighborhood in Norcross.
