Inmate dies in Clarke Co jail

The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office says the GBI will investigate the death of an inmate in the Clarke County jail: Derek Meyer was arrested on a child molestation charge back in May, accused in the sexual assault of a minor. The Sheriff’s Office says Meyer was found unresponsive in his cell and died after being taken to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center.

From the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office…

On July 29th, 2018 at approximately 12:11 P.M., Derek Meyer, a male housed in the Athens-Clarke County Jail, was found unresponsive in his cell by deputies of the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office. Meyer, age 28, was booked into the Athens-Clarke County Jail on May 11, 2018, on sexual assault charges involving a minor. At the time of the incident, he was housed in a single man cell. Jail security and medical staff performed lifesaving treatment until EMS arrived on scene. Meyer was transported to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center and placed on life support until his death on Tuesday evening, July 31st.

The Meyer family has been notified. No further information will be released at this time pending the investigations by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office.
