Homeless advocate to walk to Athens to begin UGA Law School classes

Gordon Wayne says he will walk from Virginia to Athens starting next week, raising money and awareness in the fight against homelessness: it’s the same thing he did three years ago, walking from Virginia to Boston. Wayne, who had been homeless, graduated from Boston College in May and will be a student in the University of Georgia’s College of Law beginning next month.

From Gordon Wayne…

In 2020, after persevering through a 14-month experience with homelessness to attain acceptance to a prestigious university where I was guaranteed stable shelter, the sorrow in my heart for those who would remain deprived of their humanity led me to realize my purpose; to end American homelessness. I subsequently embarked on a fundraiser walk from my hometown in central Virginia to my new home, Boston College. I will forever be grateful for the news coverage of our mission, which helped tremendously in spreading awareness and raising funds for the National Alliance to End Homelessness.

It is time for me to embark on my next journey, which will help me inch closer to ultimately ending homelessness in America, allowing everyone the opportunity to reach their full potential. Now that I graduated from Boston College in May, I will attend the University of Georgia Law School on full scholarship in August. I believe a legal background will enable me to understand the systemic flaws that make homelessness possible and make my most significant practical impact on this tragic epidemic.

I will again walk to school, from my hometown in Caroline County, VA, to the University of Georgia in Athens, GA. The journey will take me about 19 days and encompass over 500 miles. I aim to improve my fundraiser promotion to go along with much better logistics planning. I am accomplishing this primarily by recording time-lapse + motivational + educational videos for the National Alliance to End Homelessness, which will air on their YouTube channel (which I hope will dramatically increase its currently low engagement).
