Georgia law enforcement reminds NYE drivers: Don’t drink and drive

Georgia State Patrol pulls over driver

The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety joins law enforcement in warning drivers to avoid driving under the influence over the holidays.

Robert Hydrick with the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety says the most recent number available shows hundreds of people lose their lives every year.

“Five-hundred people were killed in Georgia in 2022 in crashes involving an alcohol-impaired driver,” Hydrick said.

That is nearly 30 percent of all fatalities involving a drunk driver.

How much is too much to drink and drive?

“The rule of thumb is if you are planning to drink, don’t plan to drive,” Hydrick added. “Don’t ever chance it.”

Hydrick says the blood alcohol level to be charged with DUI is .08, and if a driver registers that or higher, he or she will be charged with a DUI.

He adds that recently there has been an increase in people driving under the influence of drugs.

From the Georgia State Police to local sheriff’s offices, Hydrick said there will be increased patrols.
