Eastside Kroger groundbreaking today

Today is a groundbreaking day in Athens. Kroger marks the ceremonial start of work on an expanded store on Athens’ east side. Ceremonies at what will be a 120 thousand square foot store are set for 1 o’clock this afternoon at the store site off Barnett Shoals Road in Athens.

On Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at 1:00 p.m., Kroger’s Atlanta Division will break ground on its new store located at 2040 Barnett Shoals Road in Athens, Georgia. The new store represents a $36 million capital investment and will encompass more than 120,000 square feet. It will replace the College Station Kroger located at 2301 College Station Road and is expected to open in Summer of 2025.

“We are very excited to break ground on this new store,” said Victor Smith, president of Kroger’s Atlanta Division. “As America’s grocer, we recognize Kroger’s unique role in the communities we serve. As an employer, food processor, retailer, healthcare provider and more, we have a responsibility to create positive change and deliver on our purpose to feed the human spirit.”

In addition to Kroger’s popular departments, such as bakery, deli, meat and fresh produce, the new store will include a wide variety of features, including Starbucks, Murray’s Cheese, Grocery Pickup and Apparel.

“Kroger is building the new store to meet the growing needs of the community,” said Smith.
