Deadline for input on Newton Bridge Road TAD plan

Today is the last day to provide public input on plans for a Tax Allocation District for Athens’ Newton Bridge Road corridor. An online survey is on the Athens-Clarke County government website.

The Athens-Clarke County Economic Development Department and the Newton Bridge Tax Allocation District Advisory Committee will host two open house sessions and an online survey during November for residents to provide input on items they would like to see constructed within the TAD boundaries.

The open house sessions will take place on Tuesday, November 7 from 5:00-7:00 PM at Athens Cotton Press (149 Oneta Street) and Thursday, November 9 from 5:00-7:00 PM at Terrapin Beer Co. (265 Newton Bridge Road). Light refreshments will be provided. Residents can drop in anytime during the open houses to learn more about the TAD process and provide input on ideas for community improvements.

An online survey will be available at www.accgov.com/tads through December 1 for those who cannot attend the sessions. Additional outreach will also take place in the Newton Bridge Road area with organizations, businesses, and residents.

A Tax Allocation District is a redevelopment tool that uses the increased property taxes generated by new development in a designated area to finance costs related to development. These costs might include, but are not limited to, public infrastructure, demolition, utilities, and planning costs.

On November 10, 2020, the Mayor & Commission adopted redevelopment plans to establish six tax allocation districts across Athens-Clarke County. Additional information about all six TADS, including maps, is available at www.accgov.com/tads.

The Newton Bridge Road TAD consists of 165 property parcels totaling 1,113.6 acres. Located northwest of downtown Athens, the area is bordered by the CSX railroad to the south, the Paradise Valley Industrial Park to the west, the North Oconee River to the north, and the Norfolk Southern Railroad to the east. Not all parcels are included in the TAD.
