Constitution anniversary observances in Athens, Watkinsville

The University of Georgia’s Department of Political Science is hosting today’s Constitution Day activities, set for 1 o’clock in the Chapel on UGA’s North Campus.

There is a weekend ceremony in Watkinsville, observances to mark the 236th anniversary of the 1787 signing of the US Constitution: it is set for 3:30 Sunday at the Ashford Memorial Methodist Church in Watkinsville, organized by an Oconee County chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The Reverend John Andrew Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution will host the chapter’s annual Constitution Day Celebration on September 17th, 2023, at 3:30 p.m., at Ashford Memorial Methodist Church in Watkinsville, Georgia.

To commemorate the 1787 historic signing, guests will enjoy patriotic music performed by the Athens Area Homeschool Band and the Watkinsville Junior American Citizens, followed by community bell ringing and a Constitutional history skit narrated by the JAC and William Daniell Society Children of the American Revolution.

At the conclusion of the program, all are invited to a reception behind the Watkinsville courthouse to hear the sound of freedom reverberate via a musket salute by the Sons of the American Revolution and a Civil War cannon-fire finale, compliments of Don Phillip’s IMI Industrial Services Group.
