City Hall outlines Juneteenth closures, schedule changes

We’re getting details from Athens City Hall on what will be open and operating on tomorrow’s Juneteenth holiday, and what will not be. The Athens-Clarke County Animal Shelter is closed on Wednesday, Athens Transit is not running buses, and the landfIll on Lexington road will be closed. Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services says parks and pools will be open Wednesday.

On Tuesday, June 7, 2022, the Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission approved an ordinance that established Juneteenth (June 19) as a holiday for Athens-Clarke County employees. Specific schedule and service changes are included below.

Animal Services

  • The Animal Shelter will be closed on Wednesday, June 19.
  • The shelter will resume regular operating hours on Thursday, June 20 for fosters, adoptions, and rescues.
  • Animal Services officers will not be available for non-emergency calls on Wednesday, June 19. Non-emergency service calls will resume on Thursday, June 20.
  • Emergency services such as an animal bite, a seriously sick or injured animal, or an animal trapped inside of a living space of a home will be provided throughout the holiday by calling 911.

Leisure Services

  • Leisure Services will not operate their summer camp schedule on Wednesday, June 19.
  • Parks will operate under regular hours on Wednesday, June 19.
  • Pools at Heard Park, Lay Park, and Memorial Park, along with splash pads at Rocksprings Park and Walker Park will be open on Wednesday, June 19. The Bishop Park Pool is closed for the entire 2024 season.
  • All facilities will reopen on Thursday, June 20 under regular hours of operation.

Solid Waste

  • Solid Waste will suspend compost, garbage, recycling, and leaf & limb collections on Wednesday, June 19. All administrative offices will be closed.
  • Residential garbage and recycling collection will pick-up as follows: Monday and Tuesday collections will be picked-up as regularly scheduled. Regular Wednesday collection will be picked up on Thursday. Regular Thursday and Friday collection will be picked-up on Friday.
  • Downtown district commercial and residential customers will be picked up on the regular schedule.
  • Leaf and limb collection will be suspended on Wednesday, June 19. Leaf and limb is currently scheduled to complete collection in area A and begin collection in area B the week of June 17.
  • The Landfill will be closed on Wednesday, June 19. Regular hours will resume on Thursday, June 20 from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
  • The CHaRM Facility will be closed on Wednesday, June 19 resuming regular hours of operation on Friday, June 21.
  • The Materials Recycling Facility will be open on Wednesday, June 19 during normal operating hours from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Transit

  • Bus service is suspended on Wednesday, June 19.
  • Transit offices will be closed on Wednesday, June 19.
  • Transit services will resume normal summer operating hours on Thursday, June 20. Passengers are encouraged to check individual route schedules for details prior to travel.

All general ACCGov Department administrative offices and facilities – including City Hall, the Water Business Office, Satula Avenue Government Building, and Dougherty Street Government Building – will be closed on Wednesday, June 19. Regular operating schedules resume on Thursday, June 20.
