Bodies found in Baldwin Hall renovation to be reburied today

A ceremony to mark the reinterment of more than 100 bodies is set for 3 o’clock this afternoon at the Oconee Hill Cemetery in Athens. The graves were uncovered during the 2015 renovation of the University of Georgia’s Baldwin Hall. University President Jere Morehead and federal judge Steve Jones of Athens are among today’s scheduled speakers.

The burials do not come without controversy. There are those who have said the bodies should have been placed in another local predominately black cemetery.
