There were no human casualties, but one dog was killed in a Thursday house fire in Barrow County: the blaze burned a home on Bismark Circle in Winder. Investigators say the fire appears to have been the result of an electrical wiring problem.

From Barrow Co Fire and Emergency Services...

At approximately 11:00AM this (Thursday) morning, communication officers with Barrow County Emergency Services received a 911 call from a resident reporting a structure fire at her neighbor’s house in the 1600 block of Bismarck Circle in Winder. Crews and apparatus from Stations 1, 6, and 7 responded.

“Upon arrival crews found a fully involved single-story residence. Neighbors were in the garage removing two dogs in kennels. The citizens were instructed to exit the structure, and shortly thereafter, the garage ceiling collapsed,” said Steve Rose, Assistant Public Information Officer.

The immediate concern was two residences on either side of the house fire. The heat was intense enough to endanger those houses as well. Crews were assigned to protect the surrounding homes while also attacking the house fire with truck mounted deck nozzles and handlines.

As the fire at the initial residence was being knocked back, an additional crew was assigned to enter a neighboring home to ensure the fire had not spread to that structure. The neighboring home suffered significant exterior damage in the form of melted siding, but the fire did not spread. A second residence on the other side of the fire was also damaged due to high heat, but the melting of exterior siding on that home was minor.

The initial home suffered extensive fire damage and was deemed a total loss. One deceased dog was recovered after the fire.

Investigators from Barrow County and the State Fire Marshal’s Office investigated and determined the fire appeared to be caused by an electrical malfunction.
