School to honor 8-year-old Secoriea Turner with balloon release Monday

ATLANTA — Family, classmates, friends and teachers of 8-year-old Secoriea Turner will honor her with a balloon release ceremony at her school Monday afternoon.

Turner was shot and killed on July 4 as she rode in a car with her mother and a friend. The driver was attempting to get around a makeshift barrier near the Wendy's where Rayshard Brooks was killed when he encountered a group of armed men. Turner was killed after someone fired shots into the car.

Julian Conley, 19, has been arrested and charged with her murder.

We share our grief with Secoriea’s family and friends who are experiencing an unimaginable loss and we offer our deepest condolences and support during this extremely difficult time. ⠀ Secoriea was a brilliant and beautiful rising 3rd grader who attended KIPP WAYS Primary School (@kippwaysprimary). Among so many things, Secoriea will be remembered as a bright light who always gave the best hugs. She was sweet, studious, and she stayed connected with her classmates even through distance learning. ⠀ Secoriea will be truly missed and her beautiful spirit will be cherished forever by all who knew her. ⠀ ⠀

The ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. at Kipp WAYS Academy in northwest Atlanta.

Turner was laid to rest during a private funeral service July 15.
