Athens-Clarke County Unified Government Manager Blaine Williams has named Nate Moss as Fire Chief and Fire and Emergency Services Department Director. A 20-year veteran of the department, Moss has served as Interim Chief since October 7, 2023 due to the retirement of former Chief Jeff Scarbrough. The appointment is effective immediately.

“After a national search for a new fire chief, I am excited to name Interim Chief Moss to the permanent position,” said Williams. “His dedication to the department and the people who serve this community is extraordinary. I know he will be an invaluable asset to the Athens-Clarke County community, the Fire and Emergency Services Department, and ACCGov as a whole.”

Moss has served with the department for over 20 years and has spent his entire career in public safety with the ACCGov Fire and Emergency Services Department. Prior to serving as Interim Chief, he served as Battalion Chief, managed public information for the department, assisted with many emergency management responsibilities, and has worked in areas of emergency suppression response, training, and administration with the department.

“Being appointed Fire Chief of Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services is the greatest professional honor of my career,” says Moss. “The greatest strength of our department is our people, and I will strive every day to assure that with teamwork and collaboration we forge our identity as an outstanding fire department that offers unparalleled service to our community.”

Moss joined the department in 2003 as part of a recruit class of 18. He joined the ranks of several other family members who had also been in fire service as a career in other locations.

During his time with Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services, Moss has served on all three shifts, obtained his EMT license, and served as Training Captain, Battalion Chief of Support Services, Fire and Emergency Services Public Information Officer, and Deputy Emergency Management Director.

The ACCGov Fire and Emergency Services Department operates nine fire stations, strategically located throughout the county, and their associated personnel and equipment. Their community services include emergency responses to fires, vehicle crashes, and other events; emergency medical responses; hazardous materials responses; search and rescue operations; water rescues; fire inspections; plans review; fire cause investigation; and fire safety education.
