ATHENS, GA — The College Square in Athens is getting a major revamp.
Construction is expected to begin next year on a $6 million dollar makeover plan for the section of College Avenue between the UGA Arch entrance and Athens City Hall.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports it’ll be a gateway to downtown Athens bars and restaurants. The transformation will include more outdoor seating, more trees, and brick pavers will replace the asphalt.
The Downtown Development Authority calls it a kind of handshake between the university and downtown Athens. It will fund the project minus a half million dollars coming from a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST).
