Athens-Clarke Co Police report two traffic fatalities

Athens-Clarke County Police say an Oglethorpe County woman was killed in a weekend car crash on Cherokee Road near Winterville: Linda Motichek was 70 years old. Police say her car was hit head-on by a vehicle driven by a 38 year-old Madison County man. He was hospitalized with what were said to be non life-threatening injuries.

Police say a man who was injured in a June 2 scooter accident on the Highway 10 Loop at Macon Highway has died. Grant Small was 35 years old, from Athens. Police say his scooter was rear-ended by a car near the Loop’s entrance ramp to Highway 441.

On June 17, 2023, at approximately 6:56 AM, ACCPD responded to a two-vehicle crash on the 1700 block of Cherokee Road. The initial investigation reveals that a 2006 Honda Accord driven by Keosha Martin (38, Hull, GA) was traveling northbound on Cherokee Road when it crossed over the center lane line and collided with a 1999 Toyota Corolla traveling southbound. The driver of the Corolla, Linda Motichek (70 YOA, Winterville, GA, Oglethorpe County), was deceased at the scene. Martin was taken to a local hospital with multiple injuries that did not appear life-threatening. A juvenile in the Accord was also transported to a local hospital for evaluation. This is the ninth fatal crash in Athens-Clarke County in 2023.

On June 2, 2023, at approximately 10:38 PM, ACCPD responded to a crash involving a 49cc scooter and a 2015 Kia Rio on the Georgia 10 Loop approximately one-half mile east of the Highway 441 entrance ramp. Both drivers were in the right lane headed east when the crash occurred. The scooter, driven by Grant Small (35 YOA, Athens), was hit in the rear by the Kia, causing Small to strike the KIA’s windshield and land in the left-hand lane of the roadway. He was taken to a local hospital in serious condition with a head injury. The driver of the Kia stayed on the scene, was interviewed, and released. On June 17th, ACCPD was notified by ACC Coroner Sonny Wilson that Small had succumbed to his injuries. This is the eighth fatal crash in Athens-Clarke County in 2023.
