Area briefs: Zarate wins Clerks race, A-CC Commission punts on fire station site selection

Elisa Zarate wins a special election to fill the unexpired term of recently retired Athens-Clarke County Clerk of Courts Beverly Logan. Zarate, who had been endorsed by Logan, outpolled Clerk’s Office veteran Andrew Griffeth in balloting that ended Tuesday. Zarate won with almost 65 percent of the vote.

Athens-Clarke County Commissioners, meeting last night at City Hall, rejected proposed locations for an east Athens fire station and are restarting the process of site selection. They also extended into February a moratorium on short-term rentals in Athens.

The Clarke County School District hosts an open house information session today: it’s for vendors and subcontractors who want might want to bid for work on the upcoming renovation of Cedar Shoals High School. It’s set for 3 til at the School District’s central office on Prince Avenue in Athens.

The Board of Directors for the University of Georgia’s Research Foundation meets this afternoon in Athens: it’s a 1 o’clock session at the Georgia Center.

Plans for a West Broad-Hawthorne Area Tax Allocation District are up for discussion in an advisory committee meeting set for 2:30 this afternoon at Athens-Clarke County Fire Station number 4: that’s on Oglethorpe Avenue in Athens.

There is another meeting of the committee that is looking at sales tax-funded improvements for the Prince Avenue corridor. The Prince Avenue Corridor Improvements User Group meets at 3 o’clock this afternoon.

Back to class this morning in Athens: Clarke County School District students are returning to classrooms after Tuesday’s teacher planning day.

The Athens MLK Day of Service Committee is looking for volunteer project sites for the Day of Service that will be held on January 15. Local organizations that would like to be considered are invited to submit applications between now Sunday. Information is on the Athens-Clarke County government website.

The City Council in Commerce is looking for ways to enhance safety at a busy intersection: the Council is considering upgrades to the Highway 441-State Street intersection in Commerce.
