Athens animal shelter resumes dog intake, adoptions

Athens-Clarke County Animal Services says the animal shelter is again accepting owner surrendered dogs and is again facilitating dog adoptions: the services were suspended for the better part of the past month after an outbreak of canine parvovirus at the shelter on Buddy Christian Way in Athens.

The dog area of the Adoption Center has re-opened for owner surrenders and adoptions as scheduled. While an additional positive parvo case was identified in a mother dog with puppies on November 5, the dogs were in an isolated area of the cat area of the shelter. While volunteers in the cat area will be limited, other adoption and intake services for cats and dogs have re-opened as normal beginning on November 8. Animal Services will be closed for the Veterans Day holiday on Friday, November 10.
