Armed guards begin patrols in Gainesville schools

Tuesday was the first day on the job for the newly hired armed security guards who are patrolling the halls of the city schools in Gainesville: the Gainesville City School Board voted earlier this year to fund the school security measure.

From the Georgia News Network…

Armed guards are now protecting students, faculty, and staff at all Gainesville City Schools.

During a Board of Education meeting on Monday night, officials announced that the district had hired 10 armed guards. One will be posted at each elementary and middle school, with two assigned to the high school.

The guards and current School Resource Officers will report to law enforcement veteran Bonner Burton, the Gainesville School District’s new Safety and Security Manager. Superintendent Dr. Jeremy Williams says besides making campuses safer, the goal is to improve the relationship between students and law enforcement.
