Area briefs: UGA’s spring classes end, Commissioners meet in Danielsville, Lexington

Spring semester classes end today at UGA: final exams begin later this week, with the University of Georgia’s spring graduation exercises set for May 11 and 12. The Athens-Clarke County government is looking for public input on proposed locations for a site for an east Athens library: a feedback form will be on the Athens-Clarke County government website through May 21.

An Oconee County School Board work session is set for 6 o’clock at the School District offices on School Street in Watkinsville.

Madison County Commissioners meet this evening, 6 o’clock at the Madison County Government Complex in Danielsville. Their Oglethorpe County counterparts meet at 6 at the courthouse in Lexington.

Governor Brian Kemp has signed the bill named in honor of Athens murder victim Tara Baker, the UGA Law School student who was killed two decades ago in a duplex on Lexington Road in a murder that remains unsolved. The measure that passed in this year’s legislative session gives additional resources to law enforcement working to close cold cases in Georgia.

It will mean upwards of one thousand jobs in Jackson County, lost to layoffs: the Bed, Bath, and Beyond Warehouse in Pendergrass is set to be closed by the end of July.

We have this morning the name of the Lawrenceville man who was killed in a shooting in Norcross: Jerrett Mitchell was 22 years old. He was found dead in the doorway of a restaurant in Norcross. Gwinnett County Police were, at last report, trying to identify and track down a suspect in the deadly shooting.
