Area briefs: UGA summer classes begin, climate conference continues

Today is the first day of the University of Georgia’s Maymester classes. Extended summer session classes are also underway today at UGA.

Today is Day 3 of the Georgia Climate Conference: it’s continuing at the University of Georgia’s Georgia Center.

A federal grand jury in Gainesville hands up indictments against two accused Hall County drug traffickers: Adolfo and Candido Garcia are charged in what federal drug agents say was a $22 million methamphetamine operation. They were arrested after a traffic stop in Oakwood.

A Lumpkin County man is in the Lumpkin County jail, caught with what sheriff’s deputies in Dahlonega say was more than a pound of methamphetamine. Suspect Shaun Cleveland is 37 years old, from Dahlonega.

We have today the name of the man whose body was found in a park on Lake Lanier: the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office says Melvin Warnecke was 78 years old. There is no word yet on cause of death. The Sheriff’s Office in Cumming says autopsy results are pending.
