Area briefs: UGA student injured by falling tree, Hall Co fire victim identified

A University of Georgia student remains in the hospital, receiving treatment for injuries after she was hit by a falling tree: it happened on campus during a Wednesday afternoon thunderstorm. Mia Corte has just completed her sophomore year at UGA. She was hospitalized, at last report in critical condition, at Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center.

An EMT in Danielsville wins a top state honor: Madison County’s Jen Carter has been named Georgia’s Paramedic of the Year, an award presented by the state EMS Association.

Barrow County names its Teacher of the Year. The honor goes Angela Graham, who teaches at Kennedy Elementary School in Winder.

Hall County will use a $3 million to state grant to fund construction of a new library planned for east Hall.

Four convicted drug traffickers are heading to prison for dealing drugs in Hall County. Federal prosecutors say police seized more than 400 pounds of meth in a raid on a home in Gainesville in the summer of 2021. The suspects were involved in supplying, distributing, and selling the methamphetamine. Sentences for the four men range from five to 14 years.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office says forensic testing has led to the identification of a 69 year-old man who was killed in a March motorhome fire. Tony Hudson’s body was found after the fire on Floyd Road in Hall County.
