Area briefs: UGA sets graduation dates, Watkinsville City Council meets

With its fall semester just underway, the University of Georgia is already setting graduation dates: fall graduation will be held December 15 in Stegeman Coliseum, while the University’s spring commencement exercises are set for May 10 of next year in Sanford Stadium.

The University of Georgia’s Fall Engagement Fair is set for 7 o’clock tonight at the University’s Tate Student Center. More than 400 UGA campus organizations are expected to have representatives on hand.

Last night’s special called meeting of the City Council in Watkinsville featured Council action on a $3.5 million financing package from GEFA, the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority. The low interest loan will help the city acquire 100 acres of greenspace. The purchase of the Thomas Farms property off Simonton Bridge Road in Watkinsville was announced earlier this year. The city will also use three quarters of million American Rescue Plan dollars to help with the property acquisition.

Donald Ford was laid to rest after a Wednesday funeral in Clarkesville. The 72 year-old Ford, who died last week, was a Hart County native and a veteran law enforcement officer, having served as police chief in Baldwin and for the schools in Habersham County.
