Area briefs: Clarke Co Sheriff draws challenger, UGA students begin break

Clarke County Sheriff John Q. Williams, who says he will run for a second term, has opposition in next year’s elections: Tommy Dorsey, a Sheriff’s Office veteran who now works in the Clarke County School District Police Department, says he will be on the ballot in 2024.

There is tax talk today in Athens: the citizens committee that is providing oversight for work on projects funded by Athens-Clarke County’s 2020 SPLOST is meeting at 5 o’clock this afternoon.

The University of Georgia’s holiday break is underway: UGA students are out of class, and mostly out of Athens, until the January 8 start of the University’s spring semester.

School’s out in Oconee County: students and teachers begin their Christmas break today. The holiday break begins Thursday for students in the Clarke County School District.

The police chief in Lavonia says his department is hiring, using a quarter-million grant from the US Justice Department to employ two new Lavonia Police Officers.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating a deadly crash in Stephens County: 40 year-old Rory Winsor was from Toccoa. He was killed in a single-vehicle wreck on Prather Bridge Road just north of Toccoa.

There’s a heads-up for drivers in Hall County, where the Corps of Engineers says Buford Dam Road will close for parts of the day today, tomorrow, and Wednesday. Crews are working on guard rails. Highway 20 is a recommended detour.

Three new license plate reading and crime fighting flock cameras are now in place in north Georgia’s Chattahoochee National Recreation Area. Funding for the new technology was provided by the Chattahoochee National Park Conservancy.
